I like Castlevania. I mean I really like it. And one of those frustrated ambitions of mine is to make an NES-style clone of it. You know, imitation=flattery. Being who I am I'd want a werewolf for the hero.

The werewolf mock-up I did on Saturday got me wondering: what enemies could you put in it? The werewolf mold sticks you pretty firmly in the same world as vampire hunting, which means bats and spiders and ghosts. What could make it unique?

So here are some rough ideas sketched while I was supposedly watching House. They're simple, as I was trying to make them easy to translate to pixel art at some point. Not that I ever will, but, you know.

Hunters: Well, duh, werewolves would be hunted by guys with silver bullets in their rifles. I picture this guy with the same brown-on-brown palette as Simon Belmont.

Slashers: Jason-like dudes with big silver knives. Werewolves have to fight at close quarters and these guys are just hulking enough to be a challenge.

Cultists: Religious crazies who throw silver crucifixes. This would get my game banned from the NES.

Knight: Bah. Too much like real Castlevania.

Cats/Panthers: They don't like canines.

Birds: Birds are the bane of the 2-d hero. Play Ninja Gaiden. You'll see what I mean.

Flaming Skulls: I want these guys to have attitude, hence a lot of attempts at crooked grins and detached jawbones.

Man that's a lot of text for a crappy bunch of sketchs. If you've read this far then here's a tip: Those grids are my passwords for Castlevania III. Use the name Hiker. They'll take you to two of the hardest damn stages in the game.
