Sometimes a sketch just will not come together until you figure out what it's about.

Case in point: I drew the sloucher on the left first. I knew I wanted him in that outfit; I'd just been watching Rock & Rule and had to get Omar's gear out of my mind. I thought maybe I'd draw fake album cover or something.

Then came the guy on the ground, then the poser on the right. He looked pretty stiff, so I tried to liven him up with some foreshortening. It didn't look to be working so I drew his arm in a wacky salute.

And that's when it hit me. They're three party guys, AWOL from the base and looking for trouble. Judging by the one on the right, gay trouble. Once that was realized, it fell into place, more or less.

It's pretty hasty and messy, but that's what I get for doing a three-character image in the time I usually take to do a single.
